In my short college career in Engineering I've only been a part of two projects.
The first project was controlling an Audrino based car around a track only using the black ink on the track to control the car. The car had three sensors and based on the level from the sensors it would direct which way the car should travel. We wrote the code using MatLab. We wrote a loop that would take the values from the three sensors and based on the values would either engage the motor and the wheels, so when the sensors could not detect the black trail the car would stop.
The second project also used MatLab but this time it was as a analysis tool. We were given three cities at random and we were tasked to determine which of the three cities would be est for a Spaceport. Using my background in history I lead the group in research different data sets for the three cites we were given. Then as a group we put the data sets into Excel and then saved the data sets as files that MatLab could process. MatLab ranked the data sets and we used that as the basis for our recommendation.
